THE STORY OF ULTI-MUTT
Ulti-mutt was established in 2020 though the inspiration began years prior. Ulti-mutt’s passion is health and wellness of our canine companions, which starts in the gut. Back in 2018, a very common complaint we heard among pet parents was issues relating to their dog’s stomach. Gassiness, sensitive to food, poor skin and coat conditions, eating poop, dirt, rocks and grass, hot spots, chewing on paws and constant licking; all signs pointing to the gut lining and the lack of proper nutrient absorption.
The Research Started
Looking at what was offered for dog food was not exactly hopeful, and explained why the rate of food sensitivities and intolerances are on a rise. In addition, the rows of treat options were ghastly. Packed with chemicals and synthetic “natural” flavors leaving the only real food component of cereal grain. Chews are made with mystery meats and are chemically treated for longer lasting shelf life. Also, Bones go through harsh chemical baths and then treated with more chemicals. Those treats made us believe they are a big factor in destroying our dog’s digestive system. This triggered the desire for us to gain more knowledge to help us and other pet parents to provide ulti-mutt nutrition.
The Creation
Chef and owner, Jennifer, while studying and researching the inner workings of our canine friends, started mixing batches in her kitchen and taste testing on her four dogs; Bear, Diesel, Rebel and Remi in 2019. By early 2020, Jennifer starting working on proper testing and licensing. Then, Ulti-mutt’s first debut was at the local farmers market spring of 2020. As we all experienced that year, it was a slow, unsure time, but Jennifer was hopeful and determined to share her passion of canine health with the community.
The Journey Continued
Coming out of a very uncertain year, the continued education of animal health, testing, baking and more research kept Jennifer very busy. By summer of 2021, Ulti-mutt moved from Jennifer’s kitchen into a commercial kitchen, and Bobby was brought in as co-owner and head of sales. In 2022, we continue gaining knowledge and educating others on the benefits of a natural diet, which encourages longevity for our furry family members.
Ulti-mutt dog treats are now carried in many locations around Alabama, and shipped to hundreds of pet parents all over the United States.
MEET THE CHEF
Jennifer is the owner and chef at Ulti-mutt bakery, a barkery dedicated to canine health and wellness. Jennifer spends countless hours doing exactly what she is passionate about, BAKING. She loves to take a table full of raw ingredients and watch them take form and finally come out of the oven smelling amazing. Yes! we are talking about dog treats.
Jennifer studied Biotechnology and Genetics for eight years, and another four in Entrepreneurial Studies. During her genetics program, Jennifer worked on an ovarian cancer research project in a research lab in Salt Lake City, Utah. Although, life didn’t continue down the scientific career path, it’s played a major role in her dedication and passion for a healthier world.
In 2018, Jennifer’s focus on animal health started. She went back to continue her education in small animal nutrition and volunteered at a horse rescue. At the rescue she met Delilah, a beautiful quarter horse that had a very unpleasant past. She spent the next year and a half helping to rehabilitate her. The reward of watching her transformation was surreal and that is what Jennifer wanted to see more of – animals given the chance to thrive, to live a full and healthy life.
Jennifer currently lives in Alabama where she spends her time with her four dogs, caring for her chickens, gardening and painting. She also has an absolute love for nature, travel and being surrounded by family and friends.
